Where has April gone?

Yes, it's true...
I've just had the longest blog hiatus since I started blogging in Spring 2008!

I've just been busy livin' life and drowning in work.
April has been a whirlwind.
11 regular sessions. 26 mini sessions in one weekend. 1 wedding
That's what I've been up to!

I am currently working my way through editing the 26 mini sessions,
and preparing to shoot a wedding this coming weekend.

You can visit my photoblog to see some recent sessions and peeks from the Spring Minis.
Elephant Juice Photography

Then there's my little man and hubby.
We've been spending lots of time outside, cleaning up the house and yard.
Last weekend I had a rare weekend with no sessions, so I took full advantage,
and got outside to plant flowers and clean up my beds. It was wonderful!
I LOVE my job, but all the evenings and weekends are a sacrifice of time away from my family.

I have been too busy shooting for others, I have lost all motivation to pick up my camera and document our day to day life. It's sad, but true.
Thank goodness for my cell phone camera. It's always there, and easy!

So for now, that's all I really have...

I'm hoping in May I will be able to pick back up on shooting for me!

believe

From our family to yours...
We hope you had a very Merry Christmas!

Enjoy our 2010 Christmas card! I sorta LOVE designing cards...a lot!!
{here are our 2009 cards}

I'd been planning this one since...ummm, September, when I booked our family pics and started planning our wardrobe colors.  But, I didn't start pulling together the design until early December, once all my client cards had been finished, ordered and delivered. They come first! I was so thankful to have amazing images by our friends Dac and Alisha! They totally helped make my vision a reality! I usually go with non-traditional Christmas colors, and I am so happy with the way these turned out.  My lab rocks. They were super speedy, as usual, getting them to this impatient girl! They are just my style. They. are. me.

And they happen to coordinate with my tree really well =)
See...my style.

Hopefully I'll have time to share some of my client's cards on the photo blog soon!
I don't have a clue how many I did this year, but it was so much fun working with everyone!

For now, please enjoy OUR 2010 in pictures!
most you've probably seen here!!
And, for those who will ask...Music: Point of Grace, How you Live

{the macs::2010}

*****

I have been enjoying several days in a row (woot, woot) of time off from everything computer related!
{no work, no editing, no blogging, and very little Facebook and emailing}

It was wonderful, but now it's time to get back at it!

THIS is why I haven't posted in over a week....

October is my favorite month...
BUT I think it's also the busiest month of the whole year!

There is so much going on during this month that I want to document and share on my blog,
I think sometimes I just get overwhelmed! So many pics to share and events to journal.
{I'm in the middle of several posts, but Google told me I'd used up my picture space, so I had to buy more! Jeesh!}

Oh, and then there's this little business I have that keeps me busy!
I had my Fall Mini Session over the past weekend, and I have been an editing fool!
It was the perfect weekend, and it all went off without a hitch!

I was so excited to get home on Sunday to see my family and just SIT DOWN!
It was fun, but totally exhausting. I had blisters from the miles I'm sure I walked over the two days.
My face was sunburnt, and my thumb callus returned from the HOURS of holding my heavy hand weight camera.

It's a great 'get fit' plan though!
I should do it every weekend. On my feet non-stop, and a great cardio plan (hiking through the wilderness, climbing down to the creek, lifting couches and chairs).  I drank gallons and gallons of water, but hardly ever had to use the restroom, I was that dehydrated. I was never really hungry. On Saturday, my sweet sister-in-law brought lunch out, and I didn't even get three bites before the next client came. On Sunday, I neglected to eat lunch...and it was almost 8pm when I finally had dinner. THANK goodness for my sister-in-law (again) for keeping my son most of the weekend. Justin was on-call, so she came to the rescue when he was called out to El Dorado and Augusta. She also had Barrett bathed when we came to get him Sunday night, AND had hot supper on the table for us!

I had so much great help! Thanks to my friends, Audra and Christie, for helping on Saturday! They were awesome, and great company! My hubby for helping haul all my furniture around. He thinks I'm crazy, but he does anything I ask. My mom for helping on Sunday afternoon, and of course Sky and his family for the awesome location!! We had so many cool places to shoot! It was a blast!!

So, here's what I've been up to....
See lots of {peeks} from the weekend session on my photoblog!

******

I'll be back soon with pictures from our recent family adventures.
I have to wait 24 hours for the photo storage to be added to my account!

This weather is INSPIRING!

Too bad I am sicky-poo, and can't be out enjoying it! I haven't had much energy this week.  Today when I woke up, I could hardly swallow, and my chest was burning. I've gotten better throughout the day, but still don't have much motivation...and I sound like a MAN when I talk! Real nice! Thanks to my sis-in-law, who came to pick up Barrett. At least he can play outside and enjoy the Spring-like weather we're having! I took a shower and am feeling a little refreshed.

Until I'm back in the blogging mood...head over to my photoblog and read about a day of Spring {Mini } Sessions I'm offering in April! I have been planning this for a while, and was so excited when I got confirmation from the owners of a local Bed & Breakfast that it was okay to use their property!

I am headed over to update the scheduling.
Enjoy your weekend! I hope it's beautiful where you are :)

It's the most WONDERFUL time of the year...

It has been a blessed year for our family, and we have so much to be thankful for!

It is the most WONDERFUL time of the year...
as we celebrate the birth of Jesus!

I was a little later than usual getting our cards out, but I DID IT! I was so busy designing and printing cards for everyone else, I wasn't sure I would be able to get to my own. Then I realized, this is a big part of my business...of course I have to do cards for my own family! I think everyone should have theirs by now, so I'd love to share our 2009 card with you all too!

MERRY CHRISTMAS, from our family to yours!

I had fun with our card this year! Thanks again to my awesome sister-in-law for helping with our family pictures in November!! If I can find the time, I hope to be able to post some of the cards I've done for my clients this year. You'll have to check my photo blog in the next few days for those. My clients have great taste, and we had lots of beautiful cards this year!

I still have a few more posts I'd like to get in before the NEW YEAR!
You know I'll be working on my 2009 blog book before long :)

just for {FUN}

October and November are my BUSY months for portrait sessions. I have sessions booked every weekend through the first of December, and several during the weekday evenings. I LOVE all of the fun families and children I'm meeting...but it's a LOT of work!! I spend all of my nights and Barrett's nap times editing images and corresponding with clients. I keep reassuring Justin that this is my busy season, and as the weather gets cold, things will slow down...or I just won't book myself so solid :)

I've been working on updating/polishing my photography blog & website in the midst of all the sessions and editing...so, if you haven't been to visit them lately, let me know what you think! Are they easy to navigate, information clear, not too cluttered, anything you want to know that you can't find, etc. I would love your feedback. Especially on the new menu bar at the top of my photoblog. You can leave comments here, there or email me: elephantjuicedesigns@gmail.com

AND now...just for {FUN}
a sprinkling of my current favorite things!

Exciting Announcement!!!

***UPDATED***
I think we have a winner with design B (or #2)
That was the one I was leaning towards as well. I might see if I can make the font a tad thicker.
THANKS to everyone for your feedback! My readers ROCK!

NEW: Elephant Juice Designs & Photography Blog

My business is *blooming* and I am looking forward to a busy Fall season full of amazing portrait sessions. Before all of that begins, I want to announce my new photography blog! As you can see, I'm revamping my business branding. The possibilities for the future of Elephant Juice Designs are endless. Go check out the new digs, read more about it ,and let me know what you think! Don't forget to bookmark me!

I'm still keeping this blog, just as it is {but I might change the name, as to not get it confused with my business blog and sites}. Only it will now go back to being mainly about me and my family...the reason I started it! It is a digital scrapbook of our lives. Although I love to showcase my photography on it, I'm ready to get back to my random "favorite things" posts, {get REAL} challenges, and stories about my baby boy!!

Any ideas for a new name for this blog?!?

I think I'm pretty happy with the new colors and logo design...but I'm still open to suggestions and feedback. I'm not sure about the font though. Please give me your vote!

Wedding Day!!

Engagement photo:: By Kelly Highby Photography

I can't believe it's already August 1, 2009! My little brother's wedding day! Brandon and Jennifer were engaged in December 2008, and it seems like just yesterday we started planning wedding invitations, programs and decorations. The months have flown by, as always, and today is the day! The weather for last nights rehearsal was perfect, and we're hoping for the same tonight. We've been decorating today, and it's a beautiful sunny day...highs in the 80's, which is not at all typical for an August day in Kansas! It is going to be a picture perfect day for an outdoor wedding and celebration! Pictures to come later :)

The Wedding Invitations::

Congratulations, Brandon and Jennifer!
Everything is going to be beautiful!

RaNdoM...and long

* So, Friday was pretty much one of the worst days of my life since the first trimester of my pregnancy with Barrett. I was swamped with trying to finish up invite orders before our vacation, and noticed my printer was starting to put a thin black line on all my print-outs. This is a major problem when people are paying you to print their wedding invites, programs, menus, etc. After two hours on the phone with Dell, and running all kinds of tests on my printer. They determined I needed a replacement part for the drum. Sounds simple, right? NO...not simple, because my warranty was up. I'd purchased the HUGE printer in late 2006. In order to get the part, I'd have to extend my warranty so that a tech could come out and replace the part. Apparently the cost of doing that would have been over $250, so they told me "it would be best to just buy a new printer, since mine was so old anyway." WHAT!?! Since when is 2-1/2 years old? $590.00 later, I'm the proud owner of a new printer. NOT what I had in mind for all the profits I've made the last couple months.

After that nightmare, I called my mom and Justin to vent. Then I decided I was going to have to just keep printing and hope the line would fade. I had a program and menu order that needed to be shipped out to New Jersey by Saturday morning, for a Friday wedding. I finished up all of the programs and things were going okay, until the printer quit! With 50 menus left to print, it was telling me that the drum needed replaced. Thankfully my dad has a very similar color laser at his office, so I met him there at 10 p.m. to finish up the last few. Things kept going downhill though. His printer didn't want to suck up my paper, and when it finally did, it was turning everything yellow!

Thankfully I did get them finished and in the mail to NJ Saturday morning. Now I'm hoping my printer comes today, so I can finish up the order I have waiting. I'm going to have an ulcer!!

* I just watched the last episode of 16 & Pregnant, and I was balling my eyes out! The teenage couple was giving the baby up for adoption. It was heart-wrenching. By the time it was over, I had a headache from crying so much!!

* Are you one of those people that has to have the house clean, the beds all made, the dishes all washed, and the floors vacuumed, before you leave town for vacation? I am...and it's not helping with my already high stress levels! {Justin always asks if I'm cleaning for the burglars} At least I went to 6am spinning today, so that helped get me kick-started and motivated for the day. Now, I need to start packing soon. I keep adding things to the list, but I haven't officially started. It's so much harder with a toddler. They require so much stuff!!

* Here are a few of the invitation designs I've been working on the last couple months.

With all of the portrait sessions I've been doing, I've ordered many of these proof books for clients! I just love them. The printing company I use is wonderful and these books are a perfect way for clients to see all of their session and order prints, and they're great little books to tuck in your purse and show off to friends and family! I need one!

* I am really thinking about starting a business blog. I love sharing all of my designs and portrait session sneak peeks on here, but I want to get back to the main reason I started this blog..a digital scrapbook for our family and Barrett. I feel like I haven't been posting enough of that lately. True, I haven't really had much spare time, but it's something I'm willing to make the time for in order to keep the two more separate. My photography adventure seems to be taking off like crazy, and want to have a spot to share all that's going on with that. Where I can announce upcoming specials, prices, and other details. I do have an Elephant Juice Designs website. But I don't want to cram it too full of information. It's more of a showcase and client proofing spot. Does anyone out there use Wordpress, or know anything about it? Any advice on how their blogs work? I'm pretty sure that's the route I'll have to go for a more professional looking blog.

* I've gotten a few fun new finds! Mom and I found this basket at Hobby Lobby while we were getting things for my little brother's rehearsal dinner. It was on sale for $5.00. It is perfect for newborns, because it's so soft.

Then I found this basket at a garage sale on Saturday for $2.00! I got out to run to the post office and bank, and just stopped at one sale really quick. I'm glad I did. It's perfect for cradling newborns. I used it at both of my newborn sessions on Sunday, but I still need to work on what angles work best with it.

*I FINALLY got a camera strap! You might remember this post from awhile back (holy cow, it was late February!!), when I was trying to decide what strap to get. Well, I stressed about it way too much...like spent over an hour on Etsy going back and forth between fabrics and designers! Then one of my favorite blogs, Prop Insanity, had a feature post on straps and the designer {designs by Jessie} was offering free shipping and a free lens cap pocket on the strap! It was the *kick* I needed to just order one already!!

* Why do I finally feel like being productive around the house, when I have a million things to do for my business? On Friday (same day that I had a load of invite orders due, a portrait session, and a mental breakdown) I had the urge to organize our bedroom closet and clean out the dresser drawers! Maybe I was just trying to work off some of that frustration from my two hour conversation with Dell!

* Summer TV:: Anyone else addicted to summer reality shows like I am? I watch too much TV; but I admit it, I'm okay with it, and there's no way I could give it up! Okay, I'm sure I could give it up if I had to, but unless I go on Survivor in the Fall, that's not happening! Really...is it bad that I'm already excited about the Bachelorette tonight??

The Bachelorette: Ed was one of my favorites from the beginning! He's adorable...but it seemed a little too easy for him to just leave her behind for his career. AND, I'm not really sure what to think about those ridiculously short shorts he was wearing last week, and how comfortable he looks with his legs crossed.

Bachelor Ed...I just saw on the website he's only 29. I'm starting to feel old.
Everyone on these shows is now my age or younger!

Bachelor Kiptyn...if you're curious, he's 31.

Wes (not in the running anymore), probably the most hated bachelor of all time.
I know he was a total jerk, supposedly having a girlfriend back home.
I'm ashamed to say...I had a {tiny} little crush on him! Well, only during the
first few episodes when he acted a little more like a gentleman.

Big Brother 11: This just started last week, and it is a major commitment to watch. It's on like three days a week! Thank goodness for DVR, or I'd miss it all the time. It always takes a couple weeks to really get good and drama-filled. I don't really have a favorite yet this season, but Jeff is my favorite to look at :)

Design Star: I guess my degree in Interior Design makes this show a lot of fun to watch. It started last night, but I haven't had time to watch yet, and I'm sure Justin will want me to wait for him! He probably didn't want me to tell you that though! So, I'll have to tell you my favorites later.

Okay...off to be productive while Barrett is still napping! My new printer isn't here yet, but I have plenty of paper cutting and packing to keep my busy! Have a wonderful Monday! Here's to hoping this week is a million times better than last week was!!

January Wedding:: the programs

I have been busy with several wedding orders for the past few months. This week I am finishing up programs for a client whose wedding is January 31st. This is the first time I have done programs of this style, and I really like the way they turned out. I love the small, square size and the simplicity of them. This client's colors were ivory, black, silver and a hint of red. She wanted to keep things classic with her invites and programs though, so we only used the ivory, black and silver.

These programs are done in ivory linen paper and tied with a black double-faced satin ribbon.

I am SO LUCKY to have had my niece, Kylie, over yesterday. She played with Barrett while I got some work done on the programs. Barrett and Kylie both love to read, so they spent quite a bit of time snuggled up on the couch with all his new books. Thanks for your help Kylie!

I have been trying to get my website together for the past couple weeks. I'd neglected it for too long. If you haven't visited Elephant Juice Designs in awhile, go take a peek and let me know what you think. I would love any feedback you have...Is it easy to navigate? Is there something else you'd like to see? Is there anything that confuses you?

There still aren't a lot of sample pictures on there yet, but I'm working on it! If you're a past client of mine and would like to contribute a comment for my testimonials page, I would very grateful! Just email your comment to: elephantjuicedesigns@gmail.com

Happy Friday!!

designing with damask

I've been working on a lot of custom Christmas card orders in the last week. I'm having a blast designing special layouts for my clients. Last night I thought I'd work on a few ideas for our own card. I'm a traditional girl. I tend to use a lot of classic design. Right now, I'm loving the damask pattern. I tried it out in a couple different color schemes and layouts. What do you think?

If you're interested in a custom card design for
Christmas or any occasion, email me!
elephantjuicedesigns@gmail.com

These press cards are printed front and back on beautiful art paper, and come with white envelopes. They're great for invites and birth announcements too.
I'd love to design something unique just for YOU!

***FOR MY BLOGGY FRIENDS***
(followers, commenters & lurkers)
If you refer friends and family members to my business, and they place an order with me during the month of November...you will get a $5 credit (for each family/friend order) towards your own Christmas card order.

cute little hedgehog!

I had my first giveaway a few weeks ago, to celebrate my 100th post! Samantha was the WINNER, so we emailed back and forth and I designed something custom, just for her! She liked the Olive green and rich brown color combination, and had a fun idea for her notecards. She wanted something with hedgehogs! I had fun with these and I hope she'll like them.

She chose the design without her name. I like them both, so I'm glad the decision was up to her!

Samantha, I took them to the post office yesterday, so be watching for your cards! Enjoy~
