What in the heck do you do, when you're 19-month-old BOY says that to you?!?!?
It was about two weeks ago, when Barrett was playing in the living room and he stopped and held his crotch/diaper, like he had to go to the bathroom. I asked him if he was going potty. Then he reached out for my hand, and led me right into the bathroom, to the "big" potty! I hollered for Justin and said "what in the heck am I supposed to do"? He was no help, so I ripped off B's diaper and plopped him up on the potty! He looked at me like I was crazy, and immediately wanted to squirm off.
After that, he was obsessed with the potty. So we decided to get the potty chair down out of the attic. It has now taken up a permanent residency in our {already crowded} bathroom! This might be TMI, but anytime Mommy goes potty, Barrett has to sit on his potty too. He even pulls down his shorts before he sits...but he doesn't take off his diaper.
Anyone out there with BOYS, please HELP!! I have no idea how to handle this. I think it's way too early to potty train, and I'm really in no hurry...but my son seems to really want to learn. It is my personal opinion that my baby boy is pretty smart. He understands so much, but I just don't see how a 19-month-old can know when they need to go and tell you?? I think he's smart enough to get the concept now, but I just do see it sticking around for a 19-month-old. He seems to be really confused when I make him sit down on the potty and I put up the little "wee-wee guard." It's like he knows that Daddy doesn't sit down when he does it. I just don't get how you teach them to do it sitting, and then one day you say, "oh, by the way...you pee standing up!"
Onto other news...
Barrett loves doing somersaults! He does them at the most random times too. He'll just stop what he's doing, put his head on the floor between his legs and flop over. He's getting really fast at it, but doesn't always chose the best places to roll. I foresee some bruises in the near future.
(Notice in the photo below that he's preparing for one right into the door jamb, and wearing one of my Crocs!! Don't worry, he didn't follow through with this one...so no bruises yet)
He's {mad} about another hand-me-down from my aunt! The AquaDoodle! We get this thing out several times everyday!
He discovered a new show the other morning while I was getting ready in the bathroom. He was being a holy terror/tornado through the house, so I turned on our bedroom tv to distract him for a bit. The Fresh Beat Band, on Disney was on, and he was instantly in a trance! This picture of him reminds me so much of my little brother, Brandon, when he was about this age.
I love my boy!!!!!

Here's a little video I shot of him watching the show....
I just love his little face, and when he says "Mama," it melts my heart!

He's got a new hat! I found this adorable little hat at the big back to school consignment sale I go to with Megan and Audra. I got all sorts of goodies this time...lots of long sleeve shirts and jeans, a pair of shoes, and a few hats. I call this the "Elmer Fudd" hat. Barrett is always wearing it around. I think he mostly just likes playing with the velcro strap.
We're still spending a LOT of time out on the back patio. The weather has been amazing, so we're taking advantage of it. We've had the windows open for the past week, and it's so nice to enjoy the fresh air and not have to run the AC. There's nothing better than waking up to the chilly air and needing extra blankets to snuggle down with...in August!
One of Barrett's favorite things to do outside (besides rides in the car) is sidewalk chalk. It's sometimes hard for Mommy to allow, since it's messy! But I'm getting better at that!

I have a feeling those pictures are going to show up at AFTERGLOW!!! And probably be shown to any girls he brings home :)
ReplyDeleteso cute! he's a lil' heartbreaker. I love the hat~
ReplyDeleteAs for the potty training..... I think it was about that age when Paxon started showing interest, but it wasn't until just this JULY when he was actually "potty trained" ie; wearing underwear ALL the time (even at night) and going completely by himself. I think you're doing all the right things, by just getting excited with him, showing him what it's all about and having fun with it while having no expectations (or no pressure for him). Paxon went through times where he was really interested and then times where all he wanted was his diaper. Barrett will do it when he's ready with some gentle encouragement. This is the beginning of learning how. If he wants to stand up and aim, throw some cheerios in the big toilet and tell him to 'squirt' them. OR have him "sink" pieces of tiolet paper.... FUN! FUN!
Thank you SO MUCH for all of the advice, Katelin! It's so nice to have other moms to trade tips with :) Especially other moms of boys!!
ReplyDeleteHey Laura ~ I love reading your blog and your pictures are really good. I was at that class in Wichita with ya but I didn't really get anything out of it darn it. Oh well!! As for potty training, I always felt like it was NEVER going to take effect but after they did figure it out, I looked back and thought "that wasn't so bad". The key is patience. Both of my boys were trained right around age 3. Good Luck.
ReplyDeleteThe sidewak chalk pictures are precious... How fun! :) Good luck with the potty training.. I'm from a family of 3 girls and we have no clue what to do with those "things." Ha!
ReplyDeleteyeah for the potty...he looked so cute..christie might be right--afterglow here they come. not, that i know anything..but, i think your doing the right thing...keep it up! see you at kdi tmrw :)
ReplyDeleteFor some reason I didn't get notified when you posted this!! Hmmm...
ReplyDeleteAnyway, love this post!! You crack me up!! Huntler was three and three months before we finally got him potty trained! We tried twice before that, but the third time was the charm with him! He too showed interest when he was younger, but he just never really got it!!
Good luck!
Love that pic of you and Barrett...super cute!!
Sorry, no potty advice. I am dreading that personally! But sounds promising and good luck!!! Nicholas adores that show too. He always stops and dances when their "commercials" come on noggin. btw, I love his hat! very cute! :)
ReplyDeleteJust keep doing what your doing...if he's acting interested...let him. He may decide by next week it's for the birds..but he make take off with it! If he keeps showing interest, take him into potty around every hour or so...he'll get it! Don't be disappointed if he loses interest in the next week or two! Zane trained right at 2 and Cutter was probably 2 or 2 1/2yrs--- great pics...love the hat!! My boys LOVED sidewalk chalk too!!!
